As always, I photographed what I heard. There is something inherently poetic about the way natural elements interact with one another. On a particularly breezy Autumn afternoon, as I wandered through a serene marshland at the German North Sea coast, I was captivated by the sight of reed grass dancing in the wind. The slender blades moved with such fluidity and grace that they resembled flowing ribbons, swaying and undulating with every gust.
Moment of natural choreography like this speak to me on a deep level. It was as if the reed grass had surrendered to the wind’s embrace, allowing itself to be guided, shaped, and transformed by an invisible force. It reminded me of a Buddhist metaphor to be like grass, which emphasises humility, resilience, and the ability to remain grounded while enduring the various challenges and changes of life. This dance of nature encapsulated a sense of freedom and tranquillity that I wanted to capture and share through my art.
The Artistic Process
Creating "Ribbons" was about translating a fleeting moment into a piece of fine art. Following my underlying Shibui aesthetic, I chose to work in black and white, focusing on the shapes, lines, and textures. Using abstracting camera techniques and bodily motion, I was able to blur the lines of the reed grass, creating a sense of motion that mimicked the wind’s gentle caress. The resulting image is one where the reeds appear as soft, flowing ribbons, each line merging and diverging in a harmonious dance.
